Colin Wiggins: So Betsy, my first reaction to the ‘The Hoerengracht’ when I first saw it, which was now just over four years ago when it was shown at the Baltic in Gateshead, was to experience a sensation that I’m walking into a 17th-century Dutch townscape, because you have all of the details of the buildings, the bricks, the door frames. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Edward Kienholz (–) made The Beanery in , basing it on his local bar, The Original Beanery, on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles. It took Kienholz six months to consolidate and replicate the bar’s contents in an artwork.
